It is generally accepted that social networks are now used widely, but every time I give a talk about how to use them in business-to-business, I get the same question: “Yes, social networks help me to be in contact with many people, but how do I turn this into business opportunities with new sales leads?“.

The simple answer is that social networks extend your database of customers and prospects so you can use them for direct marketing. But I admit… personally, when I receive a message that I have not initiated, either from a “contact” I have never met or from a discussion group, I just hit the ‘delete’ key.

So, how can you use social networking to increase your business? The accepted process is to find a business contact (Procurement, R&D….), secure an introduction to him or her, and then build the business case step by step whilst establishing the relationship. I believe social networking can help you with the two first steps. And it can make a huge difference.

I would like to share my own experience with you: a couple of years ago, I was working with a distributor who was trying to introduce my products to one of their customers. Despite the established relationship, the process was proving quite slow. Until the day, by coincidence, I met the General Manager of this company at a dinner hosted by a trade association, some 6.000 kms away. We had an informal chat and I was able to explore some of my ideas with him.

A few months later, we closed the deal.

There is no doubt that my distributor had been doing a good job, but what happened at that dinner was that social networking bypassed the formalities and catalyzed the sales process.

In B2B, sales is first and foremost a matter of relationship, and it’s really amazing how a personal recommendation from someone in the company can really make the difference. Even if you are able to just say “hello” to someone you met once briefly, you have got one foot in the door and you don’t have to spend all your energy trying to open the door.

That is one of the reasons why I created Biziker: I have been travelling extensively for the last ten years, and whether it was at the airport, in the taxi queue, in a restaurant or in the lobby at my hotel, I don’t know how many times I have been stood or sat next to people who could have helped me. They weren’t necessarily decision makers, but they were able to introduce me to the right people at the right time.

By bringing people together for an informal and friendly event, we help to establish that personal relationship. Don’t expect a new sales lead every time you join a Biziker event (and by the way, don’t be aggressive towards the people you meet, this is both contrary to Biziker’s principles and is absolutely counter-productive), but be sure that meeting face-to-face will help you to build a relationship or get an introduction the day you will need it.

Success requires a lot of work, but also a bit of luck and networking can help that luck. By organising events to introduce people travelling to the same place to each other, Biziker can help you to create your luck.

No wonder this city is a common travel destination among business travellers.

Although English is widely used in this international center of commerce, brushing up on some German phrases for easier communication won’t hurt. There are other things you might want to bear in mind when in doing business in Frankfurt apart from wearing formal business attire is that punctuality is very important to German businessmen since they also prefer having an organized schedule. Shaking hands, introducing oneself, and handing out business cards is the right way to present oneself. Light conversation may be brought up but usually, these busy people like to get right down to business.

Upon arrival in Frankfurt Airport, one may take a bus, tram, or taxi to get to the business centres. They’re all efficient and accessible so one will hardly break a sweat. The city is pretty compact so walking is quite alright. Just like its straightforward businessmen and services, traditional Frankfurt and Hessian cuisine is also straightforward when it comes to presentation and preparation. But the delectable characteristic of its cuisine is still appetizing. Fressgrass or “eating road” is a notable area for dining. The Fressgass features a lot of cafes, restaurants, and delicatessen food stores. The correct name of this street is Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse and to get to this place, one may take the subway to station Hauptwache or Alte Oper. Fressgrass is a popular area to dine after the daily shopping.

Speaking of shopping, Fussgängerzone (pedestrian street) of the Zeil, the most popular shopping area beginning at Hauptwache and stretching all the way to Konstablerwache, with the city’s main department stores (Kaufhof and Karstadt) as bookends. Having spare leisure time during a business travel in Frankfurt may be spent shopping in its many small shops and boutiques. Another way to spend leisure time is through visiting Frankfurt’s many museums like the Frankfurter Goethe-Museum and House which is dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Best known for Faust, the author and poet was born in Frankfurt in 1749, and his childhood home and collection of works, paintings, and personal items can be found in this museum.

First aid packs are readily available in groceries or pharmacies. If it is store-bought, you usually get a package that includes the basic supplies such as sterile gauzes, antiseptic solutions, scissors, adhesive tapes, thermometer, antifungal cream, insect repellent, rehydration salts, sunscreen, and few of the most common over-the-counter pills. These are very reliable remedies indeed, however, a first aid kit always differs from one person to another.  You should treat it like you do your briefcase, or your laptop for that matter—you buy one and customize its content according to your needs.

Since you are travelling for business, you could stuff your kit (in addition to the staple assortment of supplies and medicines) with fever thermometer, hot and cold packs, clean absorbent hand towel, some antinauseant, antidiarrheal, paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen, antacid, and antibiotics to prevent or cure the typical ailments that travellers usually experience like motion/travel sickness, migraine, hyperacidity, diarrhea, muscle pain, cough, colds, slight fever, and even flu.

Aside from those common medications, usual prescription and non-prescription drugs that you regularly take should never be left behind as well. It is also essential to keep a copy of emergency numbers such hospital and clinic hotlines as well as your physician’s contact details in your first aid travel kit.

So when planning to go on work-related trip, include a first aid kit in your to-bring-checklist. It will certainly save you from risky health situations that get in the way of accomplishing your business goals.

Any business traveller should be aware of local customs of his or her destination not only to impress clients or other businessmen, but to also get around and get along with locals easily. Handshakes are alright but a little too formal for some Barcelonans, so when the relation is established,  two kisses, might be used as a way of greeting one another.

Another notable custom is how Spanish people like to entertain guests in restaurants or bars rather than in their homes. But if they do decide to invite or entertain people in their house, bringing simple gifts like a bottle of wine, chocolates, or even flowers are welcomed. It is also good to know that Barcelonans’ eat lunch and dinner a little later than what it commonly practiced in other places. They usually have lunch at around 2pm and dinner at around 9pm in the evening. If the service was good, one may tip a least five or ten percent of the total bill if there was no service charge issued. Local change may be given as tips at the bar.

It’s good to establish a little rapport but having information on getting to and from one’s destinations should also be a business traveller’s top priority. There are a number of ways on how to travel like taking a metro or rapid transit, a bus, a tramcar, or a metered taxi. From Barcelona Airport or El Prat Airport, one can take a shuttle coach to the Renaissance Barcelona Airport Hotel within four minutes. During July until August, cotton and loose-fitting garments may be used. However, you will find the men wearing ties in most business situations as you can’t go wrong with it. Being a city dominated by mostly Catholics, proper attire must be worn when visiting churches or religious occasions. It is also a walkable city so try to bring comfortable shoes.

The “Chicago Loop” is the famous historic commercial center of Chicago and Chicago’s central business district is bounded on the west and north by the Chicago River, on the east by Lake Michigan, and on the south by Roosevelt Road. From the O’Hare International Airport, one can hail a cab to the Loop. The cab fare will cost around $40.

Of course, lots of hotels are available in Chicago. Early booking to one of these hotels could provide hotel car service to get you to and from the hotel or around the bustling city. One can also just hail a cab.

Being a major transportation and telecommunications hub in North America, Wi-Fi or internet access won’t be a problem in Chicago.

Of course, money apparently is an undeniable need. Also, you can compare banks or money exchange establishments for good rates. Usual business and working hours in Chicago start from 9am until 5pm. But there are some offices which close slightly later. The banks are usually open from 8am until 4pm during weekdays and only until midday on Saturdays.

But just knowing about the location of your needs won’t guarantee that you can easily make your way through this “Alpha World City,” so here are a few reminders on how to interact with the locals especially with Chicago business clients or partners. Like what they say, “When in Rome, do what the Romans do.”

Being an American city, English is the primarily language used in Chicago. But like any other state or country, Chicagoans have their own local customs or jargon. An example which may also be useful when doing business in Chicago is “huddling” which means conducting a meeting or discussion. Although beepers are obsolete, try not to be confused when a receptionist or secretary tells you that he or she will “page” your business partner. It simply means that he or she will notify your business partner about your presence. And yes, “Starbucks” is a brand but it usually means coffee.

Although Americans are less formal in attire and manners compared to Europeans, appropriate business attire and gesture should always be upheld. But short sleeved shirts are acceptable during summer. Then, punctuality is a quality that every businessman should possess. No matter where he goes, this trait should also be with him. Another appropriate business gesture is to briefly shake hands as a customary greeting. Often, new acquaintances are addressed with their first names. Usually, lunch breaks are used for business meetings so one must bear that some selected restaurants require a strict dress code. Also, most places are non-smoking zones so try to ask around about possible areas for lighting a cigarette.

Giving gifts can be a way to strengthen business relationships or bonds so make sure that your gifts are unique and should reflect a special bond. It won’t work if your gifts seem more like bribery. This idea doesn’t only pertain to doing business in Chicago. It can be applied when you business travel to other places.

Then there’s the topography. Chicago is pretty much lined with skyscrapers in various heights, making it a typical urban city.
